in between. going into this debate, this really was not and in between the situation where president obama was ahead. governor romney desperately needed to shake this race of. something had to change the trajectory and this election. it needed to be something very substantial. here we are now at this momentous event. it was in the realm of debates. this is certainly much more decisive, i think, then pretty much any other debate that any of us can remember. i thought governor romney did a fabulous job on both a relative basis. quite fabulous and on a nominal basis. he did very well. i think it is true to say that superiorbama is 8 superia orator and i think mitt romney is a superior debater. it occurred to me that this reminded me of the mitt romney i met in 1994 when he was running for the senate. he met with me. he was incredibly impressive and fact driven. he was a very pragmatic. obama seemed like -- i wouldn't say smug, but someone who did not seem terribly hungry for it. i do not think there is any question that when you look at some of the -- and i am not really big on these polls --

" used at all during the debate last night? that was a measure not only of president obama's this engagement, but mitt romney not wanting to bring in up, and jim lehrer, i don't know what was going on. . host: laura is a republican. hi, laura, you are on. caller: i wanted to say to katrina, if you want to talk about common sense policies, maybe you need to listen to rush limbaugh and maybe you need to really listen to what mr. romney said about this economy. if you are concerned about poverty, do you know that the number one group tracked in poverty is single thing all households -- single female soul? you need to look at stuff that the conservatives are saying because they care about the portrait they don't want people trapped in poverty. they know what small businesses, which employs 60-70% of the citizens and in this country, taxed more. if you tax small business, they are not going to hire. i don't know how you don't figure out what mr. romney so eloquently said in that debate. talking about politics of the 1% or the 47%, conservatives want the best for all folks, and y

obama is a superior or a tour. -- orator but i think romney is a better debator. we saw something we have not been seeing in a long time and it occurred to me that this reminded me more of the romney i met in 1994 when he was running for senate and came by and met with me and was just incredibly impressive, and a local, pragmatic. this person has been pretending to be an ideologue for the last few years. obama seemed to be like a team sitting in the league. i would not have said "smug," but someone who did not seem to be terribly hungry for it. i do not think there's any question when you look at these instant polls. i don't care for them. the cnn opinion research corp. -- who did the best job? obama 25 and romney 67? who did better than expected? obama 21% and worse than expected 61%. 82% said ronny did better than expected. 10% said they thought he did worse. my guess is that 10% were partisan. obviously a democratic polling firm. romney has no evidence of changing the game. i agree on the first that romney had a good night. i did not know if it changed the game. wal-mart sponsors

to obama. we're going to talk with her about that but also starting point is few days after this debate, where do you think the presidential race is right now? >> i think mitt romney is looking very good. that's why the obama administration didn't want to run against mitt romney. he was clearly the most threatening of the republican candidates. i think he's the strongest candidate against obama. it's hard to take out an incumbent. republicans have only done it one time before in the last 100 years. when reagan beat carter. i guess isn't the last time it's happened when clinton took out bush, right? so it's curious, for example that there were 70 million viewers of that debate the other night, the highest it's been since 1992, the last time an incumbent was taken out. i think that's because people are uncomfortable with obama but if they're not political nuts, like we are, they haven't been paying attention, haven't been watching all the debates and they just want to see who the challenger is and whether they're comfortable with him. and i think after wednesday night, everyone's pretty c

that president obama and mitt romney are going to be debating. we have done she more debates left. at the end of the day, the person who comes out as the candidate most able to get america back on track in terms of jobs and getting people back to work, that candidate has the biggest advantage. on friday with the jobs number, present, we gained some of that advantage. i will not say the september numbers will be a game changer. but i do think we have some good news for the president. host: we are looking at the jobs figures that came out yesterday. we hear from the candidates who spoke yesterday. here is governor romney talking about the jobs numbers released. in terms of the timing. it was like the two minutes didn't matter. barack obama woods along. when i'm about to die i want barack obama's five seconds because they lasted forever.
